The car key is an essential part of every Ford vehicle – it not only unlocks and starts the car, but in modern models it also contains an immobilizer chip, and in some versions a remote control or even a Keyless system.

Evolution of Ford car keys

• Older models (e.g. Fiesta MK4, Focus MK1, Mondeo MK2) use classic keys with a passive transponder, paired only with the engine control unit (PCM/ECU).

• Newer models (e.g. Focus MK2, Mondeo MK4, Fiesta MK7) have keys combined with remote control and paired also with the GEM module or instrument cluster.

• Modern Ford vehicles (Kuga, Mondeo MK5, Focus MK4) are equipped with a Keyless Go system, where the key only carries the chip and communication is done wirelessly.

How to recognize a faulty car key?

• The vehicle does not respond to the remote control

• The engine won’t start even if the key battery is fine

• Immobilizer warning light stays on the dashboard

• The key is physically damaged or the chip is loose
